First my thanks to Prime Minister Costa for putting social rights firmly on the map and on our agenda by calling this Summit.
We meet today in Porto at a pivotal moment for Europe.
We are living in turbulent and fast-changing times. And it is critical that these changes happen in a socially-fair way.
During the pandemic, our welfare states have protected Europeans lives and income. And the EU showed true solidarity by immediately making the SURE instrument a reality to support Member States.
The 27 heads of EU national governments will commit to “closely following” progress towards new jobs, skills and poverty reduction targets and will be open to adding new indicators to the GDP to measure national progress, according to the latest draft of the Porto social summit declaration seen by EURACTIV.
