Yolo County grass fire burning over 500 acres in wildlife area

The fire is burning in a rural area of Fremont Weir State Wildlife Area. Author: Samantha Solomon (ABC10) Updated: 10:17 AM PDT May 20, 2021 KNIGHTS LANDING, Calif. 10:15 a.m. update: People in Sacramento might be smelling smoke today as the fire in Yolo county is sending light smoke to areas south of the fire. Stronger northwest winds this afternoon will continue to send smoke and haze from smoldering fire and prescribed fires into areas like Sacramento. The private air monitoring system called Purple Air Is detecting small smoke particles from a number of air sensors hooked up to their network. 8:30 a.m. update:

The blaze ignited Wednesday night in the Fremont Weir State Wildlife Area, which is near Woodland and the Sacramento International Airport. Sign up for our Newsletters The fire has proven difficult for firefighters to deal with and access because of its location. As of early Thursday, it had charred an estimated 500 acres. No homes or structures are threatened. Yolo County noted that fire crews may be doing some back-burning Thursday, so smoke may be visible in the region.

Seeing Haiti through native eyes

Haiti is not a poor country, it’s rich in culture and wondrous natural landscapes. Associated Students Adventure Outings gave students a free virtual tour of Haiti on May 4. It was facilitated by Jean Chrislot Michaud, a Haitain-born Wildcat. He was born in Port-Uu Price, the capital of Haiti.  Michaud was delighted to share some history, traditions and popular cuisines from his homeland.  Haiti is a part of the West Indies Islands, which is surrounded by the Carribean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, which has a collective 19 million inhabitants. It’s sandwiched between Cuba and Puerto Rico and neighbors Jamaica along with thousands of other small islands.

Amazon doubled its workforce in Sacramento over the past year, adding roughly 4,000 warehouse workers, package deliverers and others as COVID-19 devoured much of the rest of the economy and shoppers retreated from malls.
