Researchers will be testing Chathamâs untreated wastewater for COVID-19 in an effort to quickly identify and manage potential community transmission.
The tests for traces of COVID-19 from fecal shedding were scheduled to begin Monday.

COVID-19 wastewater surveillance programs are used in many regions for pandemic management, said a news release from the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit.
Increases in COVID-19 sewage markers can serve as an early warning sign of increased community transmission, said the release. Wastewater analysis trends can be used to inform public health mitigation efforts, such as targeted testing and enhanced infection control advice.
