17 February 2021 UCL and Santander UK, through SantanderUniversities, are to extend their long-standing partnership for a further three years, bringing the latter’s cumulative support of UCL’s student community to in excess of £1.5 million.
The first year of the new agreement will enable the creation of 60 scholarships and awards dedicated to supporting widening participation, employability and innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives at the university.
Santander’s wide-ranging provision will include 16 mobility awards for students from underrepresented backgrounds and financial assistance for start-up businesses within BaseKX (UCL’s entrepreneurship hub in King’s Cross, run by UCL Innovation & Enterprise) and EdTech Labs.
Rotherham-based Planet X has secured a £3.225 million funding package through Santander UK.
In 2020, Planet X’s 50 employees acquired the business from its founders and set up an Employee Owned Trust. The business has now moved its banking to Santander UK and is accessing a range of facilities to support its international growth plans.
The company has predominately UK-based customers, with around 73% of its turnover coming from UK based sales. It is planning to increase its international sales from its current levels of 22% of turnover from Europe and 5% from the rest of the world. Santander UK is supporting the business with a £1.5 million trade finance facility, alongside a range of additional support totalling £3.225 million.
First 4 Bridging appoints Sonia Mann as account manager

Specialist distributor First 4 Bridging has appointed Sonia Mann as a key account manager to cover the Midlands and surrounding areas.
Veteran Mann Sonia joins the Surrey-based firm from specialist lender Together, where she was a corporate director.
Previously, she spent 18 years at NatWest in a variety of roles, and has also worked at Santander UK and the Royal Bank of Scotland, as a client relations manager.
First 4 Bridging says Mann’s “wealth of experience in building and maintaining key relationships will allow the F4B brand to strengthen and broaden the support it provides to intermediaries and introducers”.
