It will pose a tricky challenge for those at the helm. The six women profiled here are part of a national trend: More women than ever hold executive roles at museums, according to a survey released in 2018 by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. But diversity is stagnant. The number of people of color in similar positions grew from just 11 percent to 12 percent between 2015 and 2018, when data was most recently available. All the women profiled pointed to mentorship as a possible remedy.

Valentine’s Day • San Diego Oasis offers virtual classes for older adults, including “ The Heart as a Symbol of Love: A History” at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12. Local arts institutions receive Getty Foundation research grants

When it comes to science-based exhibitions, institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) and the Mingei International Museum are not often the first places that come to mind. But in 2024, MCASD and Mingei, along with the La Jolla Historical Society, the San Diego Museum of Art and the UC San Diego Institute of Arts and Humanities, will all unveil multifaceted, multitiered programming as part of the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time: Art x Science x L.A.” Pacific Standard Time is a series of concurrent exhibitions held throughout Southern California. On Jan. 27, it was announced that more than $5 million in exhibition research grants had been awarded to 45 organizations throughout the region.

Memories at the Museum

Memories at the Museum Cost: Free Take part in a discussion and virtual tour of several Balboa Park museums. Docents with the Memories at the Museum program engage people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease and an accompanying family member or friend in discussions about the artwork to stimulate visual and verbal abilities, and to spark memory.
