Column: Santee council s disputed hateful rhetoric claim dredges up city s own dark past

Print Santee worked hard over the last year to move past two ugly incidents that brought unwanted national attention and rekindled interest in the small East County city’s history of racism. Just days apart in May in two different grocery stores, a man was spotted wearing a Ku Klux Klan-style hood and two people were seen wearing face masks with swastikas on them. Amid citywide soul-searching, public officials universally condemned the events as hate speech, fostered dialog about the city’s culture, expanded a community policing committee and hung banners declaring “Santee Embraces Unity!” Last week, Santee was back in the news over a claim of intolerance. This time it was initiated by City Council members who suggested they had a moral duty to call out “hateful rhetoric,” though that description is rejected by the target of their criticism: Nathan Fletcher, chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.
