Lakeland house s decline raises questions about historic protections

LAKELAND In its prime, the house ranked among the most distinguished in Lakeland, a Victorian treasure standing along a street whose very name signals prosperity. The house at 1022 Success Ave., one of the oldest in the South Lake Morton Historic District, is a modified Queen Anne structure in a neighborhood dominated by Craftsman homes and bungalows. Built before 1910, it stood stately with such exterior features as a hexagonal turret, oversized bay windows and a wraparound porch. On the inside, the home gleamed with sophisticated details: an ornate staircase, 10-foot ceilings, mahogany-stained crown moldings, broken-tile floors and three fireplaces, including one in the parlor lined with Delft tiles.

Good Shepherd Hospice grief center plans Lakeland site

Catie Ivey used to draw joy from hearing her grandfather and great-grandfather argue over which could claim her as “his” girl. “They would always  not real fight-fight, but joking-fight about who loved her more,” said Catie’s mother, Cathy Carlock of Winter Haven. And then, within a span of four months in 2019, both men were gone. Catie’s grandfather, Michael Fahrion, died unexpectedly, and her great-grandfather, Ben Coppola, later succumbed to a long illness. Shandale Terrell, Mike Musick head to May 4 runoff for Lakeland seat

LAKELAND    Lakeland will hold three elections this year, as no candidate managed to capture the 50% majority of votes needed to win the Southeast District D seat on Tuesday night. Voters narrowed a wide field down to two options: Polk County educator Shandale Terrell, 46, or Michael Musick, 49, owner of Musick Roofing.  It was great to see that number of votes, I am very grateful and very humble, Terrell told The Ledger on Wednesday. I put in a lot of hard work meeting constituents where they are, and I would do the same work as city commissioner if I win the election.

Lakeland Regional Health, city strike deal to change hospital lease

LAKELAND – Lakeland Regional Health will pay the city $215 million by October to fulfill the hospital s lease through 2040, after which it will pay $10 a year going forward.  Lakeland commissioners voted 6-1 to accept a prepayment of the hospital s lease on Monday afternoon. It will free the nonprofit health care provider from its annual lease payment to the city, which is currently more than $14 million per year.  We are clearly in uncertain times, overall and certainly in the health care environment, Lakeland Regional Health President and CEO Danielle Drummond said. Our objective is to bring about as much certainty for the hospital as well as the city given the number of uncertainties.
