VINACAS attributed the surge in raw cashew
imports over recent months to the fact that exports have maintained stable
growth while domestic supply has been lacking.
Abnormal weather conditions also resulted in the
harvest being one month later than usual. Heavy rains during the harvest season
in cashew farming centres like the southern provinces of Binh Phuoc and Dong
Nai also hampered the drying process, thus affecting quality, the association
added.
Businesses said they have faced a shortage of raw
materials in recent years and to ensure supply for export processing have had
to increase imports even though import prices are rising.
Analysis
The Vietnamese government has estimated that following a rapid pre-pandemic rise in passenger numbers, the requirement for airport infrastructure during the next five years will be twice what it was in the past five years.
Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) reports that VND25 trillion (USD1 billion) has been invested in expanding airport infrastructure over the past five years to support passenger and cargo growth, but that it will need approximately VND120 trillion (USD5.2 billion) from 2021 to 2025 to complete infrastructure projects.
Vietnam s passenger and cargo traffic increased by an average of 17% and 13% respectively from 2012 to 2019.
However, there are questions about the selection of infrastructure projects, their geography, and whether traffic forecasts have been exaggerated.

The People’s Committee of Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam is seeking in-principle approval from Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to build an airport on Ly Son Island, one of its popular tourism hot spots.
According to Quang Ngai’s proposal, the Ly Son airport project will be executed in the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model in An Hai Commune, Ly Son Island District.
The proposal envisages the airport being capable of receiving narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320, A321, and similar models, with a runway length of 2,400 meters.

Aviation authorities have rejected the proposal of five localities to build their own airports and suggested that only one be added to the current master plan.
Airport proposals by the northern provinces of Ha Giang, Bac Giang and Ninh Binh as well as the central provinces of Binh Phuoc and Ha Tinh have been rejected by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).
The CAAV has proposed to the Ministry of Transport that the number of airports in the country stays at 28 by 2030, and just one more airport in the northern province of Cao Bang be built by 2050, bringing the total nationwide to 29.
