A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan late Friday, killing at least two people, local officials and seismologists said.
The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake which hit at 9:48 pm (1348 GMT) at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) was near the city of Dali, a popular tourist destination.

KUNMING, May 21 (Xinhua) Four earthquakes over 5.0-magnitude jolted Yangbi Yi Autonomous County in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China s Yunnan Province from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
Local residents said the earthquakes could be felt. I felt the tremor, and the cup on the table and lamp were shaking obviously, a local resident surnamed Guo told Xinhua on the phone.
In addition to Dali, strong tremors were also felt in Baoshan City and Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. The earthquakes were also felt obviously in the provincial capital Kunming and Panzhihua City in the neighboring Sichuan Province, according to the provincial seismological administration.

Beijing [China], May 21 (ANI): At least one person was killed and eight other sustained injuries following a series of earthquakes that jolted Yangbi Yi Autonomous County in southwest China s Yunnan Province on Friday, local authorities said.
One person was killed by falling rocks, said Zhang Shiwei, Party chief of Yangbi.
Three people were injured by falling tiles, and four were buried in a road collapse, among whom three have been rescued, Xinhua reported.
Four earthquakes over 5.0-magnitude hit Yangbi from 9 pm to 11 pm (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
