The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, SAN, has said that virtual assets and cryptocurrencies are risky for implementation in Nigeria.
Owasanoye made this known in his presentation to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions during its hearing on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to stop financial institutions from transacting in cryptocurrencies and matters arising therefrom.
He said, “Virtual and cryptocurrencies pose serious legal and law enforcement risks for Nigeria. The current National Identification Number registration and linking with SIM cards is a pointer to the fact that insurgents, terrorists, kidnappers, bandits, and drug merchants have used the anonymity of unregistered SIM cards to commit their crimes with relative ease.
Bauchi State governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed on Thursday tasked his political appointees to be upright, impartial, honest and patriotic in line with principles of good governance in discharging their assigned responsibilities.
The governor gave the advice while declaring the state anti-corruption workshop organised for political office holders in the state open.
The governor in a statement signed by his media aide, Muktar Gidado, said the workshop was organised for participants to gain new insights into emerging trends and development in public administration.
The governor noted that the capacity building and empowerment conference was valuable and important for strengthening the confidence, skills, knowledge and widen the horizon of participants.

Ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government are in deficit of over N1tn to the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the Fiscal Responsibility Commission announced on Wednesday.
It also announced that the FRC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission had resolved to partner in the recovery of assets and capital projects tracking in the fight against corruption.
Both organisations also committed to the exchange of ideas and resources in prosecuting the fight against corruption in public finance management across the country.
The Head, Communications, FRC, Bede Anyanwu, said in a statement issued in Abuja that these formed part of the outcomes of a courtesy call by the management team of the FRC to the ICPC head office.
