Trucker guilty in deadly 2017 Highway 401 pileup near Prescott

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File) BROCKVILLE – A Quebec truck driver has been found guilty on all charges for causing a chain-reaction pileup on Highway 401 near Prescott in 2017 that killed two people and injured three others. In her nearly three-hour decision delivered this morning (April 23), Judge Adriana Doyle found Jamil Qureshi guilty of two counts of dangerous driving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. Qureshi showed no emotion as the verdict was read. Court heard how a line of two transports followed by three vehicles were all travelling slowly – about 40 kilometers an hour – or were almost stopped in the right eastbound lane on Nov. 27, 2017 around 10:30 p.m. Qureshi’s Volvo transport – travelling at 104 kilometers and hour with the cruise control on – plowed into the back of the line.

The Care Centre co-owner faces additional mischief charge

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File) CORNWALL – A co-owner of The Care Centre is facing additional charges in relation to tenants of the facility being allowed access to the building. The Cornwall Police Service says Dan Orr, 47, is facing charges of mischief, obstructing police, failing to attend the police station for fingerprints and breach of an undertaking. Police say a tenant had been prevented from entering her home and not allowed lawful use of her property on April 8. Orr had previously been charged with mischief in February, accused of interfering “with someone’s lawful enjoyment of their property.”

Speaking with Cornwall Newswatch, Acting Cpl. Angelique Dignard says cocaine, more than $6,000 in Canadian cash, one vehicle and two crossbows were seized when officers searched the home, east of Pitt Street and Tollgate Road, on Tuesday, March 30.
