RICHMOND, Va. (WVIR) - The Virginia Department of Health says a case of the SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.7 has been identified in a sample from a person who lives in the northwest area of the commonwealth.
VDH announced Wednesday, February 3, that the unnamed adult had recently returned after international travel. The Department of General Services Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) confirmed the case using next-generation sequencing that provides a genetic blueprint of the virus that causes COVID-19.

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. â COVID-19 continues to lurk across the world, and now the new strains are creeping into the U.S. and have already found their way into Virginia.
Dr. Ryan Light, a News 3 medical expert who practices family medicine with the Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group, suspects Virginia could soon see more cases of the new variants.
âIt multiplies very rapidly,â Dr. Light said. âWe donât catch the cases right offhand -itâs the asymptomatic spread that we donât see.â
Now, there could be a possible second case of the COVID-19 strain first found in the U.K. The CDC is reporting a total of two cases of the emerging strain in the Commonwealth.
