Feds Pinpoint Russia as Likely Culprit Behind SolarWinds Attack

The widespread compromise affecting key government agencies is ongoing, according to the U.S. government. The U.S. government has identified Russia as the “likely” culprit behind the widespread SolarWinds cyberattack that has so far affected multiple federal agencies and private-sector companies. Cyberespionage is cited as the motivation behind the attack, which the feds characterized as ongoing. In a rare joint statement by the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the National Security Agency (NSA), the agencies said a task force assigned to investigate the incident has found indications that Russia was behind the attack, something many government officials and security experts had already suspected.

SolarWinds Attack: Pointing a Finger at Russia

Get Permission Mounting evidence points to the serious compromise of SolarWinds Orion software having been an intelligence gathering operation that was likely run by Russia, according to a joint U.S. intelligence assessment. It s the first public attribution to be issued by the Trump administration for the massive supply chain attack against SolarWinds. The attack campaign compromised systems at thousands of organizations for up to nine months. It was discovered not by the National Security Agency, but rather by FireEye, a private cybersecurity firm based in California that was one of the supply chain attack victims. Since FireEye on Dec. 13 issued an alert about the attack campaign, government investigators have been scrambling to ascertain what happened and how best to mitigate the damage.

Lawsuit filed against Austin-based SolarWinds following cyberattack

Austin-based software maker SolarWinds is being sued by an investor in the wake of a massive data breach that appears to have affected nearly every level of government, as well as potentially hundreds of private companies. SolarWinds investor Timothy Bremer is the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit, which accuses the company of violating federal securities law and alleges SolarWinds made “materially false and misleading statements” related to security measures.  The lawsuit, which was filed Monday in U.S. district court, seeks class-action status. The lawsuit accuses the company, CEO Kevin Thompson and chief financial officer J. Barton Kalsu of making “false and/or misleading” statements in regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in February, May, August, and November of 2020.
