The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission wants to triple some passenger vehicle tolls this year as it deals with traffic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The commission approved a 2021 budget with no toll increases, but on Monday published a legal ad calling for a series of toll changes on the commission’s eight toll bridges spanning the Delaware River between New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including the Route 22 and Intestate 78 bridges in the Easton area.
Most of the proposed changes would go into effect in April, with some slated for January 2024.
Double toll increase on table for Delaware River bridges in 2021 and 2024

Drivers who use eight Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission’s spans between New Jersey and Pennsylvania face two proposed toll increases in 2021 and 2024, blamed on revenue decreases caused by coronavirus traffic downturns.
The proposed increase, announced Monday, would be implemented on April 3, if approved by the board of commissioners at a March 29 meeting.
The 2021 proposed increase would affect the seven Commission toll bridges that accept E-ZPass and cash toll payment- the Trenton-Morrisville (Route 1), New Hope-Lambertville (Route 202), I-78, Easton-Phillipsburg (Route 22), Portland-Columbia (Routes 611, 46, and 94), Delaware Water Gap (I-80), and Milford-Montague (Route 206) bridges.
Earlier this week, the Third Circuit held in Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission v. Secretary Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry that Pennsylvania ceded its authority.
The Third Circuit held Tuesday in a precedential ruling that Pennsylvania cannot enforce its building safety regulations when it comes to the property of a bi-state commission overseeing Delaware River bridges, finding that the Keystone State gave up that authority in entering a more than 80-year-old compact creating the agency.
