(KRDO) A portion of Gold Camp Road is closed north of Cheyenne Cañon Park due to a boulder blocking the road. According to the City, the boulder fell into the road Sunday. The USDA Forest Service is working on clearing the road. The temporary closure is affecting the northern boundary of North Cheyenne Cañon Park, north of the Chutes and Ladders Trailhead, to the gravel parking lot uphill from Helen Hunt Falls Drivers are asked to avoid the road altogether until the boulder can be moved.

Never seen a boulder this large come off these canyon walls, said Scott Abbott with Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. Abbot’s been caring for parks in Colorado Springs for more than 20 years. The boulder is the size of a car. It fell with no warning Sunday afternoon. The park was crowded and a lot of visitors watched it come crashing down onto the road. We got extremely lucky that there weren t cars or recreationalists in the way when this rock decided to find a new home, said Abbott.

Gold Camp Road closed due to rockfall El Paso County Search and Rescue says Gold Camp Road in the area of North Cheyenne Cañon Park is closed in between Tunnel One and Two until further notice. A large boulder fell on the road and is blocking passage for cars. Officials say there is likely to be congestion as drivers turn around at the rockfall. Friends of Cheyenne Canyon posted on Facebook saying they have no information on an expected time of removal. Motorists are asked to avoid the area altogether. We ll continue to keep you updated as we learn more about the cleanup.
