That has vexed immigrant advocates and experts who note the White House proposed a bill this year to address the same issue involved in the case. The proposed U.S. Citizenship Act, which faces long odds, would let Sanchez and Gonzalez apply for green cards given their current status – no matter how they entered the country. Look, this is a no brainer, said Paul Wickham Schmidt, a Georgetown University law professor and former immigration judge. Why waste time on it? The administration has indicated they d like to regularize many [TPS beneficiaries] and.instead they re defending a gimmick cooked up by Stephen Miller, Trump s onetime policy adviser.
Two immigrant advocacy groups in Iowa have merged and are expanding services to immigrants and refugees across the state.
American Friends Service Committee Iowa and Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors combined their 45 years of service and officially became Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice on April 1.
It s a partnership that Executive Director Erica Johnson said expands the organization s reach since, before the merger, a majority of immigrant services were concentrated in central Iowa. We took stock of the unprecedented need and thought that we re stronger together, Johnson said.
She said Iowa MMJ is now a cohesive statewide organization that will utilize years of advocacy experience from AFSC and JFON s legal expertise.

Biden ran on to “take urgent action to undo Trump’s damage and reclaim American’s values” and “reassert America’s commitment to asylum seekers and refugees.” Continuing to deny due process to migrants under the guise of a public health order that has is anathema to Biden’s promise.
If the Biden Administration wants to reassert America’s commitment to asylum seekers and reclaim our values they need to immediately stop returning migrants to countries in crisis and turmoil. Granting TPS to Venezuela and Myanmar is a good start but continuing to expel thousands of individuals to places where they fear for their lives is unacceptable. Title 42 expulsions should be immediately halted, giving Haitians and other asylum seekers the due process guaranteed to them under our immigration laws. Further, Haiti should be granted a new TPS designation in light of the significant humanitarian and political crisis the country faces.
