Afghan government forces clashed with Taliban militants in a provincial capital about 120 kilometers from Kabul, officials and witnesses said on May 24.
Violence has been on the rise in Afghanistan since U.S. forces began their final pullout on May 1, as the militants press on with a campaign to seize new territory.
Fierce fighting erupted late on May 23 on the edge of Mihtarlam, a city of around 140,000 people and the capital of the eastern province of Laghman. Militants attacked the central prison before they were pushed back by security forces.

KABUL, May 23 (Xinhua) The intelligence agency personnel arrested three terrorists and 10 suspects linked with terrorist groups in Afghan capital city Kabul, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), the country s national intelligence agency, confirmed on Sunday. During the past 24 hours, the NDS Special Operations Forces arrested three terrorists and 10 suspected individuals during separate raids in Police District (PD) 15, PD 5 and Paghman district, the agency said in a statement.
The 10 suspects were charged for providing accommodation to terrorists, or facilitating the terror elements in Kabul, according to the statement.
Further investigation was underway. The arrest came as the capital city was hit by series of terror attacks staged by Taliban insurgents and militants of the Islamic State (IS) group opposing the government. Enditem
