Dennis Anderson: Of turkeys, and spilling blood and ink

Dennis Anderson: Of turkeys, and spilling blood and ink Dennis Anderson, Star Tribune © DENNIS ANDERSON/TNS Outdoors writer and TV show host Ron Schara has hunted wild turkeys since 1967. Some mornings in a turkey blind, the time between gobbles seems endless. This was the case recently not far north of the Twin Cities. Wood ducks fluttered onto small ponds. The odd deer picked at new shoots of green grass. And overhead, Canada geese paraded noisily, their wings flapping against a clear sky hued midnight blue. Just before dawn, two hours earlier, I had heard one tom gobble, followed by another. But perhaps I had imagined these. Now, with the temperature at 24 degrees and holding, I was waiting, if not on a turkey, then at least, as Bruce Springsteen sings, on a sunny day.

Big Brothers Big Sisters starts Conservation Buddies program

With help from a $5,000 award from NIPSCO’s Environmental Grant program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana is announcing a new program, Conservation Buddies. Conservation Buddies is inspired by Big Brother Andrew Niedermeyer and his wife, Big Sister Charita Niedermeyer. Both are interested in every aspect of outdoor life and have been honored by the National Wild Turkey Federation for their success in bringing others into their passion of hunting, fishing, shooting, birding, hiking and other outdoor activities. “The numbers of hunters are decreasing, and quickly, and the reality is that sportsmen and sportswomen pay for 80% of the conservation in the country,” Andrew Niedermeyer said. “I’d like to get more kids into hunting and fishing and conservation, and maybe they’ll start caring about conservation. This is also a different way to attract others to the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.”
