Why Republicans Still Have the Upper Hand for 2022

Republicans have had a brutal news cycle over the past month or so, between the ouster of Liz Cheney from leadership and now, the intraparty jousting over whether to get on board a January 6 commission. The overwhelming sense from the press coverage is that the party is descending into madness and civil war, and is a husk of its former self, risking long-term irrelevance.

RubMaps Ron Kind: Seedy Massage Parlor s Law Firm Exposes Deep Ties

Screenshot via YouTube 4 May 2021 The law firm representing a seedy massage parlor, that both advertises on websites known by the government to illicit sex and pays tens-of-thousands of dollars in rent to vulnerable Democrat Rep. Ron Kind (WI), also has deep ties with Ron Kind. Since last week, Kind has come under intense scrutiny for receiving tens-of-thousands of dollars from renting one of the buildings he owns to a seedy massage parlor. The business, known as “Asian Sunny Massage,” opened in 2018 and was previously named “Impression Spa.” The same day the spa opened, reports show advertisements to court customers to the spa showed up on “various illicit websites that are known as avenues for illicit sex.”

Former President Donald Trump won her district twice, and she won reelection by a narrower margin than expected in 2020. Rep. Cheri Bustos, House Democrats’ former campaign chief, announced Friday she would retire from Congress after this term, in one of the party’s first midterm surprises of the cycle. Bustos had stepped down from leading the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee after shepherding the caucus through a House election that cost roughly a dozen seats in a year where Bustos and other Democratic leaders predicted large gains.

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall) Despite the big wins in the White House and the Senate, 2020 was still a tough year for House Democrats. As you probably recall, going into the election Democrats were hoping to pick up as many as 10-15 House seats. In fact, Cook Political Report concluded Dems would likely again that many in its final pre-election forecast. What actually happened was a loss of a dozen seats. The stunning turnaround prompted one unnamed Democratic lawmaker to tell Politico, “It’s a dumpster fire.” And while some Democrats were upset with Nancy Pelosi, others took out their frustration on AOC and her Squad. And to be fair, they probably had a point. AOC had been pushing unpopular policies (defunding the police, banning fracking, socialism) and, as always, getting lots of media attention. That made things tough on moderates in purple and red districts.
