Minnesota business group wants to end $300 federal unemployment benefits, offer bonuses

Fargo, ND, USA / 740 The FAN May 26, 2021 | 10:15 AM ST. PAUL, Minn. – A group representing small businesses in Minnesota is asking the legislature to give workers incentives to stop drawing the $300 federal unemployment benefits. Mike Hickey with the National Federation of Independent Business is backing a bill in the Minnesota House that would give a $2,000 bonus to those who come off unemployment, return to work and stay on the job for at least 90 days. Hickey says, “It is time to fully reopen our economy and for workers to return to work,” which he claims will not only help small business owners recover from the pandemic, but also find people they desperately need to fill open positions.

“I’ll see you in heaven.” It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life. Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday. Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization. Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation.

Report: Illinois recovery lags nation

Normal, IL, USA / www.cities929.com May 25, 2021 | 2:42 PM (The Center Square) – Illinois is a year past its lowest point in terms of job losses and it is recovering slower than all but a handful of states. A new analysis of federal jobs data by the Illinois Policy Institute shows Illinois has added 408,400 jobs (+7.7%) since April 2020, or 7.7% of the jobs lost since then. The only states adding a lower percentage of jobs were Nebraska (+7.5%), Louisiana (+7.5%), Iowa (+7.4%), Oklahoma (+5.9%), Wyoming (+4.7%) and New Mexico (+4.2%), the report said. “Employment levels in Illinois remain 424,800 below their pre-pandemic peak in January 2020, meaning Illinois has regained fewer than half the jobs it lost during the pandemic,” the report said. “As a result, Illinois is battling one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.”
