Taipei, May 13 (CNA) Taiwan s state-run power company on Thursday initiated rolling blackouts, or short-term power outages around the country, affecting at least 8.46 million customers nationwide after a malfunction caused four generators to trip at Hsinta Power Plant in Kaohsiung.
Taiwan Power Co. said it had initiated outages in different areas as an emergency measure after generators at the plant jumped at 2:37 p.m., prompting a phone alert that was sent to cell phone users across Taiwan.

Poll says Tsai should lead TRA reform

A poll released yesterday showed that 67.7 percent of respondents agreed that President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) should oversee reforms of the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) following the Taroko Express No. 408 derailment in Hualien County on April 2.
The train crash, which left 49 people dead and more than 200 injured, is one of the worst train disasters in Taiwanese history.
Transportation authorities have repeatedly said that the TRA will be reformed.
Yen Yung-shen (顏永森), convenor of polling at the Grassroots Influence Foundation, which conducted the survey, told a news conference in Taipei that 48.8 percent of respondents said that they were dissatisfied with the government’s handling of the crash.
An annual group exhibition of works by members of the Fifth Moon Group (五月畫會), which marks its 65th anniversary this year, opened on Saturday at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.
