Thunder Bay Island Light Station wins Governor s Award for Historic Preservation | News, Sports, Jobs

May 7, 2021 Five preservation projects around Michigan were honored on Thursday with Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation, including Thunder Bay Island Light Station in Alpena County. The annual awards program recognizes historic preservation achievements in Michigan. The projects were awarded Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation during a virtual ceremony hosted by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced Thursday. Communities represented by the projects include Pokagon Township, Dearborn, Flint, Detroit and Charter Township of Alpena. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to recognize the recipients of the Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. “These historic places, spread across the state, demonstrate our state’s unique past and reflect the innovation, resiliency and pride we all share in calling ourselves Michiganders.”

MIAMI – Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood was recently deemed a national treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. So why are the streets inundated with trash? Christine Rupp, director of the Dade Heritage Trust, is working with the nonprofit Healthy Little Havana to clean up these streets up and preserve the historic neighborhood. “There’s trash all over the streets here,” Rupp said. “Little Havana has just become a dumping ground for people. There’s very little enforcement here by the city.”

Thompson Center, Green Book sites named to annual list of Illinois most endangered historic places

Thompson Center and “Green Book” sites were named among the most endangered places in Illinois by an organization dedicated to promoting and preserving historic sites across the state. Statewide, there’s a total of nine culturally significant sites that have been found to be “threatened architecturally” by Landmarks Illinois, which released its annual list Wednesday. Four are in the Chicago area. Landmarks Illinois’ goal in releasing this list is to bring attention to historical buildings it believes are in need of saving. “Communities are passionate about their historic and culturally significant places, yet too often lack the resources necessary to maintain and preserve them,” Landmarks Illinois president and CEO Bonnie McDonald said in a statement. “Our 2021 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois demonstrates the demand for creative solutions, partnerships and incentives to give places of our past a chanc
