DENVER In recognition of National Consumer Protection Week, the Colorado Division of Securities (the “Division”) announces the top investor threats for 2021 as anticipated by state regulators across the country and regulators in Mexico and Canada.
In the results of an annual survey conducted by the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), of which the Division is a member, schemes promoted through online and social media activity were identified as the top threats facing investors this year.

Gail S. Ennis, inspector general for the Social Security Administration (SSA), issued a fraud alert this week that describes the new tactic.
Imposters use images of the fake badges in phone scams to deceive people into sending money or personal information. The fraudulent versions of these identification badges look like the ID most federal employees use to gain access to government buildings, officials said.
Montana’s Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Troy Downing called in to the KGVO Montana Morning News show on Tuesday to promote his office’s participation in alerting the public to National Consumer Protection Week.

West Virginia Attorney General issued the following announcement on Feb. 26.
Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced his office will host various events across West Virginia aimed at consumer education and fighting fraud as part of National Consumer Protection Week 2021.
The Attorney General collaborates with the Federal Trade Commission and federal, state and local agencies, consumer groups and national organizations to raise awareness about consumer fraud issues from Sunday, Feb. 28, to Saturday, March 6.
The consumer protection events will give residents an opportunity to meet with a representative from the Attorney General s Office to discuss consumer-related issues and any potential questions.
“Our office works diligently year-round to protect consumers from fraud and scams, and during this special consumer protection week, we want to ensure consumers can have their questions and concerns addressed,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “These events are a gr
