PONCE INLET, Fla. – With Memorial Day just a week away, rescue teams in Central Florida are kicking training into high gear, expecting to need those skills more this year than in the past.
Volusia County Beach Patrol has been slammed with swimmers getting caught in rip currents and the Coast Guard is seeing an increase in calls for help with boaters.

On Monday, the Coast Guardsmen from Station Ponce De Leon Inlet trained for search and rescue. They worked carefully with a helicopter crew that hovered and flew just feet above, practicing how to get those stranded in the ocean to safety.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WTVA) - Alabama law enforcement reminds boaters to be safe during the summer.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Marine Patrol Division is participating in National Safe Boating Week, which is from May 22-28. This leads into the Memorial Day weekend.
From Oct. 1, 2019, to Sept. 30, 2020, Marine Patrol investigated 107 boating-related crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities. The year prior, Marine Patrol investigated 110 boating-related crashes, with 29 fatalities.

The National Weather Service has partnered with the National Safe Boating Council to help promote safe boating practices. National Safe Boating Week runs through Friday, May 28.

IA, (KICD) National Safe Boating Week kicks off today. Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Marty Eby says the program happens before Memorial Day to remind everyone of things they need to think of as they are out on the water, such as having a life jacket.
Eby also says not to drive distracted and to be aware of things that can influence your driving, such as heat, wind, and more.
Eby also says to make use of the safety of your boat device, including the engine cut-off switch. National Safe Boating week goes until the 28th.
Boating accidents at their highest in almost a decade
The report shows the most common reason for those accidents in Palm Beach County was the driver not paying attention.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â National Safe Boating Week runs from May 22- May 28 and the Florida Wildlife and Conservation Commission wants to make sure you are safe on the water, with Memorial Day just a week away.
A recently released report from FWC shows the number of boating accidents per year is on the rise in Florida.
In 2020, FWC reported 836 boating accidents in the Sunshine State. That is the highest in nine years and above the average of 722.
