How Drug Take Back Day can be more impactful this year

ROANOKE, Va. – In an effort to combat the ongoing opioid crisis, volunteers collected unused or expired prescription medications on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
Rather than flush pills down the toilet and pollute waterways, thousands of drug take back sites collected bottles of drugs. People gathered outside a CVS near Tower Shopping Center in Roanoke and unloaded full bags of medications.

Police collect unused pills on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
FAIRFIELD Pills of all sizes and shapes came in plastic or paper bags Saturday for the 20th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
People in their vehicles arrived over the course of a short four hours in their respective towns to drop off the unwanted or expired prescription or over-the-counter medication.
Personnel from the Fairfield Police Department, Rio Vista Police Department and Dixon Police Department collected the bags and handed them to volunteers.

The day is dedicated to addressing a major public health issue in the nation. According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives in 2019, as stated on Take Back Day s website.The survey revealed that a majority of misusers got the drugs from family and friends, often from a home medicine cabinet.Take Back Day allows people to dispose of
If your medicine cabinet is full of expired or unwanted medications, law enforcement officials across Iowa encourage you to safely dispose of them Saturday during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
The bi-annual effort is held each April and October and has led to the collection of 7,000 tons of unwanted prescription and nonprescription medication since it was established by the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2010, according to a news release.
This year there are at least a dozen sites in central Iowa where medications can be dropped Saturday. Most will be open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., although some, including the Urbandale Police Department, will open at 8 a.m.
