Steps taken to boost production of drug against mucormycosis, Madras High Court told. The Centre on Thursday told the Madras High Court that the demand for liposomal amphotericin-B (LAmB), a drug used for treating mucormycosis, has exceeded the supply available through domestic production as well as imports and therefore, the government had to regulate the supply to the States to avoid hoarding and inequitable distribution. Appearing before Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy, who had initiated suo motu proceedings to monitor COVID-19 related activities, Additional Solicitor General R. Sankaranarayanan said the Centre was working towards increasing the domestic production besides facilitating the increase in imports and early delivery of import orders.

‘State will identify a private partner and try to start production at the earliest’ Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and lease out the assets of the Integrated Vaccine Complex (IVC) in Chengalpattu to the Tamil Nadu government so that it can be put to use at the earliest. The complex is owned by HLL Bio-Tech Limited, under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In a letter written on Wednesday, Mr. Stalin said the modern and high-capacity facility was lying unutilised. “I wish to propose that the assets of IVC be handed over to the State government on lease, without any past liabilities and with full operational freedom. The State government will identify a private partner immediately and make all efforts to commence vaccine production at the earliest,” he said.

Report the occurrence of black fungus to Health Department: Assam Health Department

STAFF REPORTER GUWAHATI: The State Health and Family Welfare Department has taken the occurrence of black fungus seriously even though it stopped short of declaring it an epidemic. In a notification issued on Wednesday, the Department made it mandatory for all government & private health institutions and medical colleges to inform the occurrence of black fungus to the State Health Department at the district level through the Joint Directors of Health Services. The notification said that even though only one case of black fungus has been detected so far in Assam, the detection of black fungus cases has been more in other states of the country. Since the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare declared black fungus as a notifiable disease under Section 2 of the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897 the occurrence of this fungus has to be taken seriously, the notification said.
