Govt to facilitate Ayush research in veterinary medicines

Economy > Government policies 08 April 2021 Union ministry of AYUSH and the Department of Animal Husbandry on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for research on new formulations in quality drugs for veterinary applications. The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), under the ministry of AYUSH signed the MoU with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying for research on new herbs-based formulations in quality drugs for veterinary applications.  The initiative involves capacity building in related areas through training, exploring marketing possibilities for herbal veterinary medicines on a sustainable basis and providing for services, including cultivation, preservation and conservation of medicinal plants.

Technology Chintan Vaishnav to replace Ramanathan Ramanan as director of Atal Innovation Mission 05 April 2021  Acclaimed socio-technologist Chintan Vaishnav has been appointed as the new Mission Director for Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), a flagship initiative of the Government of India under the auspices of NITI Aayog. He takes over charge from Ramanathan Ramanan, who has been leading AIM as its first Mission Director since June 2017.  Vaishnav is moving from his present assignment at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, to head AIM.   Ramanan, wno was with Tata Consultancy Services has made outstanding contributions in laying strong, scalable foundations for AIM. He has also built a robust team of talented young professionals to carry forward AIM’s mission, NITI Aayog stated in a release.  

Renewal of vehicle registration, driving licence brought online

Industry > Industry monitor > Automobiles > Automobiles - general Renewal of vehicle registration, driving licence brought online 05 April 2021 The ministry of road transport and highways has issued  a press note bringing all documents relating to vehicle registration and renewal, granting of learner’s licence and licence renewal, surrender of licence etc under the electronic format. The notification has been issued under amended Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 and cover sections 4-28, 76 & 77( part) of the Motor Vehicles ( amendment) Act 2019.  The complete process of alteration and retrofitment of vehicles has been brought under the legal framework, leading to fixing of liability on both the owner and workshops for authorised agencies performing alteration or retrofitment. It will ensure safety of the vehicle and compliance with provisions of the Act, the press note stated.

Salvaging strategy: On scaling up COVID-19 vaccinations

Rational safety measures and scaled up vaccinations can rein in COVID-19 India’s aggressive second wave of coronavirus infections marked by over 1,50,000 cases a day and many deaths is clearly the result of irrational exuberance early in the new year. After prematurely assuming that COVID-19 was virtually over, governments made rash decisions to allow large religious gatherings and political campaigns with little regard for disease control. The lapse is now threatening a nascent economic recovery. Rather than view the crisis as a political setback, the government should focus on a mitigation strategy that will not hobble the economy, while stopping the wildfire spread of the virus. A key intervention would be to protect the labour force through a scaling up of vaccinations in industry and workplaces.
