ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The death penalty will be sought for a man charged in what the Albany Police Department called a âheinous crime of child abuseâ that eventually led to the death of a three-year-old girl.
Gregory Parker will face the possibility of the death penalty in connection to the May 2019 death of Janiyah Brooks.
Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards said this is an âappropriate caseâ to seek the death penalty against Parker.
Jail employees fired after being arrested in inmate contraband case
ALBANY, Georgia (Albany Herald) Two Dougherty County Jail employees have been fired after their arrests on charges related to providing contraband to inmates, and the investigation could lead to additional arrests.
Detention officers Lisa Grant and Lamar Snells violated Georgia law prohibiting providing or conspiring to pass prohibited items to inmates, according to a news release provided Thursday by the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Col. Jon Ostrander, who oversees jail operations, said he could not provide details about what kind of contraband materials are involved in the case.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Things are starting to dry up at the Dougherty County Judicial building after roughly two days of flooding that staff believe started on the third floor.
Staff said the drying process just wrapped and they are now working with insurance adjusters to capture all of the damages caused by the third-floor coffee machine waterline.
Officials said 40 to 45 percent of the building was impacted by flooding.
“There’s nothing permanent that we can’t fix,” said Dougherty County Facilities Management Director Heidi Minnick.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Months of undercover work led to two people facing a number of drug charges, according to the Albany Dougherty Drug Unit (ADDU).
On Tuesday, the drug unit executed two search warrants regarding drug sales, according to ADDU.
The warrants were executed in the 2400 block of Temple Avenue and the 2200 block of North Monroe Street.
During the searches, the following was seized:
606.4 grams (1.33 pounds) of cocaine
