Our Success or Failure Is Tied Together : Grad Student Union Activism Picks Up in Biden Era | News

On March 15, Columbia’s graduate student union began a three-week strike. Three days later, Harvard Graduate Students Union-United Automobile Workers met with University officials in their first bargaining session for a second contract. The following week, New York University’s graduate student union began voting to authorize a strike amid negotiations for its third contract — and on April 9, it voted 96.4 percent in favor. Joe Biden’s ascension to the White House has precipitated a flurry of activity by graduate student unions at private universities across the country, some of whom had avoided certain organizing efforts during the Trump administration amid fears that their cases would be used to shut down graduate students’ right to unionize altogether.

2021 AFPM Annual Meeting Virtual Edition: Green bunkers, eco-bunkers, bio-bunkers, renewable bunkers.caveat emptor! 4/11/2021   With increased efforts to save the planet from global warming and in recognition of the need to protect the environment, the UN and many countries have been considering and implementing stricter regulations for greenhouse gas, sulfur dioxide (SO 2) and nitrogen oxides (NO x) emissions regulations. This is pressuring the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other standards organizations to adopt stricter rules to be followed by fuel suppliers, shipowners, oil terminals and refineries. The pressure to find solutions to become more environmentally friendly is pushing the industry toward zero emissions targets. Potential solutions that are being heavily researched are alternative fuels. However, this is an idealized solution, since many alternative fuels are not yet ready to be utilized as bunker fuel replacement e.g., the global infrastructure i

The Mad Warhorse of Neoliberalism is Galloping Towards Perdition

by David Penner / April 11th, 2021 We are the United States of Amnesia, we learn nothing because we remember nothing. Gore Vidal, Imperial America: Reflections on the United States of Amnesia, 2004 As Americans drown in debt and atomization, the liberal class applauds the arrival of a post-nation-state neo-feudal order which is devoid of checks and balances, integration, national cohesion, or collective memory, rendering any working class resistance to fascism a Herculean task. This has been made possible because of the demise of traditional American liberalism, rooted in the values of the civil rights movement and the New Deal, and its usurpation by the cult of neoliberalism which is anchored in unrestricted immigration, multiculturalism, identity politics, and the nakedly imperialistic policies embraced by the Democratic Party since Bill Clinton. This growing collaboration between neoliberals and the oligarchy has fomented an unprecedented degree of both tribalism and unfett

Chinese shows blur Western brands over Xinjiang cotton dispute

Apr 12, 2021 HONG KONG – Viewers of some of China’s most popular online variety shows were recently greeted by a curious sight: a blur of pixels obscuring the brands on sneakers and T-shirts worn by contestants. As far as viewers could tell, the censored apparel showed no hints of obscenity or indecency. Instead, the problem lay with the foreign brands that made them. Since late March, streaming platforms in China have diligently censored the logos and symbols of brands like Adidas that adorn contestants performing dance, singing and standup-comedy routines. The phenomenon followed a feud between the government and big-name international companies that said they would avoid using cotton produced in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, where the authorities are accused of mounting a wide-reaching campaign of repression against ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs.
