The main road between Adigrat and Axum was blocked from 10 to 22 April due to hostilities, impacting several humanitarian convoys, including emergency food aid, as well as the provision of medical supplies to Axum and Adwa hospitals. Humanitarian partners were forced to use alternative longer routes to transport supplies to Shire. The Mekelle-Abi Adi-Shire route remains closed.

In 2021, almost 29 million people in the Sahel will need assistance and protection, 5 million more than at the start of 2020. Insecurity has increased dramatically. From 2015 to 2020 for example, violent attacks increased eight-fold in the Central Sahel and tripled in the Lake Chad Basin.

The 14-person team, 12 of whom are in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, comprises five environmental specialists with expertise in geology, ash management, environmental pollution and green response.

Moreover, there are critical water shortages in most parts of the region. In response, humanitarian partners and the regional government have deployed 123 water trucks to several areas, including Mekelle and Shire, targeting more than 288,000 people. An additional 285 water trucks are required over the next three months, based on recent needs assessments.
