Daily Noon Briefing Highlights – 22 April 2021 Afghanistan La Niña weather patterns that may develop into drought are compounding food insecurity in Afghanistan. One third of Afghanistan’s estimated population of 40.4 million – that is, just more than 14 million people – are facing acute food insecurity due to conflict, COVID-19, high food prices and rampant unemployment. This is according to the latest Integrated Phase Classification Food Security analysis. Out of this number, 4.2 million people (one in ten Afghans) are facing emergency food insecurity levels requiring urgent response to save lives and protect livelihoods. Nearly half of all children under 5 are projected to face acute malnutrition in 2021.

Last week, insecurity in the Adigrat area, in Tigray’s East zone, reportedly affected the movement of more than 20 relief trucks. The UN is also concerned about worsening food insecurity if conflict continues and disrupts the next planting season.

Daily Noon Briefing Highlights: Chad - Yemen

Chad Chad is characterized by growing humanitarian needs linked to the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin and the effects of the climate change. The UN, along with its partners, is continuing its operations in the country to assist the affected communities. The humanitarian response plan for Chad is seeking US$617 million this year, but it is only 6 per cent funded to date. The UN urges the international community for financial support to meet the needs of people in need. From January to September last year, the UN reached at least 2.2 million people with humanitarian assistance in the country.   Yemen
