SPRINGFIELD Late-afternoon gamblers strolling past the baccarat table ignored its sole player, a brooding dark-haired man whose gaze rarely left the table. He wore a white N95 mask, purple nitrile gloves and a lightweight hoodie the color of his chips, a bluish gray.
On her rounds at MGM Springfield, Amy Gabrila noticed him right away. The golden RESERVED placard on the table marked him as a high roller, as did the color and quantity of his chips. Grays are the color of money in Massachusetts casinos, each worth $5,000.
“He’s got about $210,000 in chips in front of him,” said Gabrila, a former casino dealer. She spoke in the low voice of a golf commentator.

As Connecticut begins to ease its COVID-19 restrictions for businesses this month, Foxwoods Resort Casino has announced it will lift most of its protocols as well.
Foxwoods said all slot machines will be on and ready for play. During the pandemic, only certain slot machines were operating to ensure social distancing. The casino said capacity restrictions will slowly be lifted for table games, restaurants, theaters, retail shops, and events this month. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Comedian Dave Chappelle has been making people laugh for decades, whether it’s his sitcoms or standup routines. In June, he will be performing at The Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort and Casino, June 24-26.
Tickets are still available on Vividseats.com and range between $226 for the mezzanine to $1,000, which gets you in the orchestra section.
Tickets are limited because of pandemic restrictions. The Foxwoods Resort and Casino may also add their own restrictions. Please check before you go.
A Connecticut Supreme Court decision could enable the town of Ledyard to recover the millions of dollars in attorney’s fees it incurred while waging a years-long legal battle to collect personal property taxes on slot machines the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe leased for Foxwoods Resort Casino.
Officially released Wednesday, the unanimous decision reverses a state Appellate Court decision that had reversed an earlier Superior Court decision. Filed in 2008, the case stemmed from Ledyard’s claim that WMS Gaming Inc., a Chicago-based company, owed $18,251 in unpaid taxes on slot machines the company owned.
In 2006, the Mashantucket Pequots, who claimed the town had no authority to tax slot machines the tribe leased from another company and operated on sovereign land, filed a federal suit against the town. The tribe filed a second federal suit after the town sued WMS Gaming in state court.
