ITHACA, N.Y. â Cornell University is partnering with the New York governorâs office and Northwell Health System to develop and train the nationâs first state public health corps, which will support COVID-19 vaccine distribution and outreach and improve long-term public health outcomes across the state.
Drawing on expertise from the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and across campus, and in online course development and delivery from eCornell, Cornell is developing a series of online courses to train at least 1,000 fellows for the New York State Public Health Corps. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the public health corps during his State of the State address Jan. 11.

“The shortest answer is we really don’t know yet,’ said Dr. Eric Cioe-Pena, director of Global Health for the Northwell Health System, which operates Staten Island University Hospital. “There’s a possibility that, just like the flu vaccine, we are going to see people who are still about to get infected. We’re not going to see people with major medical issues, but there will be some with a fever or cold symptoms.’

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak within Staten Island University Hospital’s South Campus has forced administrators to temporarily shut down a department, while relocating its psychiatric patients to other facilities within the Northwell Health System.
“Recently, a number of patients tested positive for COVID-19 in our inpatient psychiatric unit at the South Site,” SIUH spokesman Christian Preston confirmed in a statement Wednesday.
