Casey N. Moreo, 37, of 12 Gregory Road was charged Sunday with two counts of possession of high-capacity magazines and one count each of possession of an assault weapon, breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor. He was released on a $200,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on March 11. Police said they had obtained a warrant for Moreo s arrest and took him into custody Sunday without incident. 

AG Tong seeks permanent custody of neglected horses from Montville farm

Attorney General William Tong today moved for the state to gain permanent custody over eight horses who were seized late last year due to malnourishment and neglect. Stemming from a complaint issued to Montville Animal Control, Connecticut s Department of Agriculture s Animal Control Unit met with Laurel Ledge Farm owner Michelle R. Wilson in Oakdale. Authorities noted several severely underweight horses and urged the owner to consult with a veterinarian to aid their nutrition and overall health, according to a press release issued Tuesday. Upon returning to the farm, none of the suggested medical care was implemented, resulting in further deterioration in the horses conditions. One horse would need euthanization due to a severe bone infection.

Email Submit Montville  Michael Caccavale, one of two people allegedly responsible for a 2015 Montville robbery, was arrested on Dec. 22. Caccavale, 40, of Yonkers, N.Y., was charged with first-degree robbery, fifth-degree larceny, criminal attempt/conspiracy and first-degree conspiracy to commit robbery. Trooper Josue Dorelus of the state police’s media relations unit said in an email that detectives arrived at the Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock, N.Y., where Caccavale was being held on similar but unrelated charges.” “Arrangements were made for Caccavale to be extradited back to Connecticut to be served with a felony arrest warrant related to the robbery committed at the Chucky s convenience store located in Montville, CT on March 22, 2015,” Dorelus wrote.

Broadway, Main St in Norwich to be brighter year-round

NORWICH Even though the holiday lights aren’t in the downtown year, the Norwich Community Development Corp. is working on a way for decorative lights to be in the city year round. The Broadway and Main Street Streetscape Lighting Project, introduced in an August report from NCDC, the Chelsea Groton Foundation and Global City Norwich, consists of having zigzagging LED lights along the intersection of Broadway and Main Street. Work on the project began this past week, and will be finished and lit this coming week, said Global City Norwich liaison Suki Lagrito. The report said the project is a part of the larger Places/Spaces/Faces effort by Global City Norwich, which seeks to use “murals, lighting, and other space activation, to increase vibrancy.”

Former Norwich school board member gets probation on forgery charges

A former Norwich Board of Education member pleaded guilty this week to two counts of forgery and was given suspended sentences and probation on both cases, according to court documents. James Maloney pleaded guilty in Norwich Superior Court on Monday to a felony second-degree forgery charge in exchange for a four-year suspended sentence and two years of probation, according to the state’s judicial website. Maloney resigned his position on the Board of Education in June 2019 after being charged with forging an insurance document for a city basketball league. Maloney was arrested again in December 2019 and charged with third-degree forgery for creating fake receipts while applying for tax benefits. He was given a six-month sentence again, suspended and two years of probation after entering a guilty plea in the case on Monday.
