The reopening of theatres with social distancing and Covid protocols next week gives a “positive indication” that the industry can get back to normal soon, according to a leading arts charity.
However, Theatres Trust, which champions theatres in communities and supports community groups to save their local theatre, warned that it will still be impossible for many theatres to open their doors while there is a cap on capacity, and the theatres that do open with social distancing will be operating at a loss.
The Prime Minister has announced that cinemas, museums, theatres and concert halls in England will be allowed to reopen from May 17 under step three on the road map out of lockdown, although there will be capacity limits on large events.
In Step 3, all but the most high-risk sectors will be able to reopen.
While indoor entertainment and visitor attractions can welcome back customers, some businesses will have to remain closed until June 21 at the earliest under the roadmap restrictions.
Nightclubs, such as Popworld and Bar and Beyond in Norwich, will still remain closed. Adult entertainment venues such as lap dance clubs also cannot open.
COVID-19 lockdown rules from May 17
Following the move to Step 3, further venues will be permitted to open in England.
Unless a specific exemption exists, these must only be attended/used in line with the wider social contact limits at this stage – in a group of six people, the Rule of 6 , or two households indoors. This is subject to review though.

What happens at step four?
In Step 4, the government hopes to reopen the remaining settings, such as nightclubs. This will happen at least five weeks after step three begins.
Faces Essex in Gants Hill is serving brunch from May 22. The venue then expects to welcome back clubbers on June 21 with The Reunion, followed by Scandalous: The Return on June 25. Ticket prices vary.
THERE are still hopes for the Bingley Weekender festival to go ahead, its organisers have said. The event, which began after Bingley Music Live was scrapped, has become a hotly-anticipated date in the calendar. Last year’s festival, from SSD Concerts, had to be postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic and this year’s is tipped to take place between Friday, August 6 and Sunday, August 8. Bingley Weekender filled the void left by Bingley Music Live. Back in April 2019 and after weeks of speculation, Bradford Council announced the hugely popular festival would not be running that year. The Council said at the time that it had taken a “difficult decision” to scrap the festival, which was due to be held in Myrtle Park in late August.
