NEW YORK - Are some nursing-home residents being moved without notice to create "COVID-only" facilities? That s one of several concerns being raised by advocates for people with disabilities. Last March, the state said nursing homes had to accept people regardless of their COVID status - and deaths soared. Then in May, the state said only those who tested negative would be allowed in the homes. .

To hear John Ponthie tell it, you have to visit a Green House Project nursing home to truly know what they’re like.
“This doesn t look like a nursing home. This doesn t smell like a nursing home. This doesn t feel like a nursing home,” he said. “This looks like a big home a 7,500-square-foot home where these 12 elders live this rich life together, as rich as it can be given their functional decline.”
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed shortcomings in Indiana’s long-term care system, but the Indiana legislature took no action to reform care at the nursing home level this year.

Governor Andrew Cuomo to include in his 2021-22 State Budget proposal a Five-Point Nursing Home Reform Plan to require minimum hours of direct care and increased staffing levels in nursing homes, ensure visitation and transparency, restore families legal recourse, and invest in cost-effective services that help New Yorkers remain at home.
AARP sent a letter to the Governor urging him to include the reforms in his 30-day Executive Budget amendments. The nursing home crisis is front and center in this State, as it should be; now, through the State Budget, is the time and way to end it, said
