Henderson County News: LOCAL BRIEFS: DAR essay winners, help for pet owners, Francee Sherman Award

DAR honors four high school seniors The Joseph McDowell Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recognized four high school seniors for their citizenship at a virtual chapter meeting on Feb. 12. Awards went to Guadalupe Aguilar-Gaona of Henderson County Early College, Gracie Milner of Hendersonville High School, Sarah Monoson of West Henderson High School and Jordan Reaves of North Henderson High School. The topic for this year’s essay was: How do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward? The winners also participated in extracurricular activities, contributed to the community, demonstrated preparation for college and exemplified the qualities that make a good citizen: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Each winner received a $50 check, a pin and a certificate. The Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Essay contest was created in 1934 by a resolution of the DAR Continental Congress. Community mourns Flowers by Larry resident pig Lafawnduh Hendersonville Times-News A sweet pig that for years captured hearts at Flowers by Larry is now being mourned by many in the community. Lafawnduh was the pet pig of Larry Crume, owner of the flower shop in Hendersonville. She passed away last week, according to a social media post from Flowers by Larry. “From the moment she was handed to me wrapped in a bath towel March 16, 2016 until Friday, January 22, 2021 at 12:20 p.m., this girl has had my heart … this heart is shattered,” Lafawnduh had battled a “progressive infection since November.” “Lafawnduh has touched so many lives in such positive ways. I have lost count of the stories. To all who have had the opportunity to meet our wonderful girl and continued to follow or visit her, please know she left me with a heart filled with love, the post reads. 

Blue Ridge Humane hosting two holiday pet food giveaways

Blue Ridge Humane hosting two holiday pet food giveaways Staff Reports Pet owners who need pet food are invited to the following drive-thru giveaways: Saturday, Dec. 12, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County parking lot, 1304 Ashe St, Hendersonville. Monday, Dec. 14, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Blue Ridge Humane Society Adoption Center, 88 Centipede Lane, Hendersonville. Cat and dog food will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis as supplies last to those in need or affected by COVID-19, according to a news release from BRHS. Social distancing and protective measures will be taken by all staff and BRHS asks the public to do the same during the drive-thru pick-up.
