Nebraska Cattle Group Pleased Most Priority Bills Approved In Unicameral

It was a very successful session for issues backed by the Nebraska Cattlemen Association. Executive Vice President Pete McClymont says all their priority measures were approved. He says getting legislation approved for broadband expansion is a huge win for cattle producers and this measure was long overdue. McClymont says another priority measure was contained in passage of the Nebraska Farm to School Program Act. McClymont says two other priority bills that passed included a change of provisions in the Livestock Brand Act and the Dr. Fox legislation that provides for refills of veterinary drug orders by veterinary drug distributors.

Cattlemen Vice President of Government Affairs Ashley (COOLS) Kohls says their goals this year are more diverse than past years when they focused mostly on taxes. She says there are three brand bills they’re looking at including two they’re backing and one they’re opposing. She says they’re opposing LB 641, Senator Erdman’s bill that would eliminate registered feedlot provisions. Kohls says they want State Senators to pass legislation to increase broadband access and infrastructure.

LINCOLN–Nebraska state senators introduced various bills in the first eight days of the 2021 legislative session. Property tax relief was at the top of the list for many senators during last year’s session, and that focus will continue into the 2021 session. Bills related to property tax relief included the following:  LB292, introduced by Sen. Curt Friesen of Henderson, would allow the county treasurer to accept partial payments for the discharge of current or delinquent real property taxes, personal property taxes, or both. LR22CA, introduced by Sen. Lou Ann Linehan of Elkhorn, would amend the state constitution to limit the total amount of property tax revenue raised by political subdivisions.
