Newly elected BJP mayor Kulbhushan Goyal celebrates with his supporters in Panchkula
CHANDIGARH: In another humiliating defeat to Haryana s ruling BJP-JJP combine, it lost mayoral polls in two municipal corporations but won in one civic body on Wednesday.
The opposition Congress won the post of mayor for the Sonepat Municipal Corporation, while the BJP won the post in Panchkula Municipal Corporation.
In the Ambala Municipal Corporation, Congress rebel Venod Sharma s Haryana Jan Chetna Party won.
BJP s Kulbhushan Goyal won the Panchkula mayor election by defeating Congress Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia by a margin of 2,057 votes. Goyal got 49,860 votes, while Ahluwalia polled 47,803 votes.

The voting percentage recorded remained low as compared to the last MC elections held in 2013 where the voter turnout had stood at 64.01 per cent. The polling across 275 booths remained peaceful with no cases of any disruption reported. December 28, 2020 5:00:11 am

PANCHKULA’S DECISION was sealed on Sunday, with an average of 54 per cent voter turnout recorded in the high-stakes Panchkula Municipal Corporation election. More than one lakh people out of a total 1.8 lakh voters exercised their right to choose the councillors and mayor in the first direct elections.

A total of 1.85 lakh electorate are set to cast their votes for the much awaited Panchkula Municipal Corporation elections, being held after a gap of over two-and-a-half years, on Sunday. The voters, for the first time, will poll to directly elect their mayoral candidate in Panchkula– in contrast to the earlier procedure as per which the Mayor’s post was filled by one of the already elected councillors.

Congress mayoral candidate Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia and former deputy chief minister Chander Mohan Tuesday released a 20-point manifesto of Congress for Panchkula Municipal Corporation elections.
The manifesto focuses on all-round development of Panchkula by improving basic amenities for all sections of society.
The manifesto mentions management of health and hygiene keeping in mind Covid pandemic as first focus will be to control the disease effectively.
