BALTIMORE (Tribune News Service) Just as much of the nation was shutting down because of the coronavirus pandemic in March, Michaelene Carlton’s 17-year-old son tested positive for COVID-19 and quickly passed it to his parents. Carlton had the worst of the symptoms but never went to a hospital and mostly recovered in a couple of weeks. “Then, six weeks later I got ridiculously sick, like so sick I lost about 10% of my body weight and could barely get out of bed,” said the usually healthy 46-year-old Delaware woman who eventually landed at a Johns Hopkins Hospital clinic for post-COVID-19 patients.

Women with cirrhosis had worse frailty scores than men despite similar Model for End-Stage Liver Disease-Sodium (MELDNa) scores, researchers reported.
In the multicenter FrAILT study of more than 1,400 U.S. cirrhosis patients awaiting liver transplant, women displayed worse frailty scores despite similar liver disease severity. In mediation analysis, an estimated 13.0% of the gender gap in wait-list mortality was mediated by frailty, a potentially modifiable risk factor, according to Jennifer C. Lai, MD, MBA, of the University of California San Francisco.
The finding may partially explain women s higher risk of transplantation wait-list mortality and their observed disadvantage in accessing liver grafts. This observation was true despite lower prevalence of medical comorbidities in women, comparable MELDNa scores at the time of assessment, and similar rates of ascites and hepatic encephalopathy, the authors wrote in
