The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that pharmacists can draw additional doses from vials of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, potentially expanding the country s supply by millions of doses as the Trump administration negotiates with Pfizer to speed up the next round of vaccine deliveries.
The government s existing supply of the first authorized vaccine can be stretched further after pharmacists began to notice that vials contain more than the expected five doses.
The FDA is in touch with Pfizer about how to handle this issue, the agency said. In the meantime, regulators say those extra doses from a single vial can be used.
BIRMINGHAM Local hospitals are seeing an influx in patients as COVID-19 cases increase rapidly in Alabama.
On Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2020, people at St. Vincent’s East reported long waiting times in the emergency department. Hospital President Suzannah Campbell said St. Vincent’s East isn’t alone in the growing problem.
“Due to the COVID-19 surge in our community, our hospital, along with all other area hospitals, are facing capacity constraints,” said Campbell.
The surge is another reason Campbell said it is important for people to take the virus seriously.
“Now, more than ever, we need our community’s help in combating this pandemic,” Campbell added. “We implore you to practice social distancing, wear a mask and practice good hand hygiene to help us combat the spread.”

According to new data collected by the
New York Times, American college campuses have officially reported nearly 400,000 cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic in March. More than 85 campuses have reported at least 1,000 cases each with some registering well over 5,000. More than 75,000 of the cases have come since early November alone.
Those cases include more than 90 deaths involving college employees and students.

Contrary to many nefarious statements from school administrators seeking to shift the blame of the outbreaks on students, spread of the virus on campuses has very little to do with misguided social gatherings or partying. The conditions in student dormitories, and even off campus housing, are simply not conducive to proper social distancing.
