“An assault on critical thinking and democracy” was how former vice president Jejomar “Jojo” Binay described the military’s red-tagging of several universities.
Lieutenant Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr., spokesman for the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), had earlier said that around 18 colleges and universities are recruitment grounds for communist groups.
Aside from the University of the Philippines (UP), Parlade named the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), University of Santo Tomas (UST), Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Far Eastern University (FEU), University of Makati (UMak), among others.

Maj. Gen. Vicente Danao, director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), dared the politicians who support the New People’s Army (NPA) to let their own children go to the mountains and far-flung areas of the country to fight government troopers.

“To the congressmen who are the protectors of the leftist groups, if you indeed believe that this ideology is good, I challenge you to let your children go uphill and teach them,” said Danao.
Danao made the statement amid the raging debate, especially in the social media, about communist insurgency that was triggered when Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana unilaterally abrogated the agreement with the University of the Philippines to have the military coordinate first before its personnel could enter any of its campuses.

Three Catholic universities in the Philippines have condemned comments by a high-ranking military official branding them as recruitment centers for communist rebels.
According to Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade, Jr, commander of an anti-communist rebel task force, at least 18 universities, many in capital Manila, are recruiting grounds for communist rebels.
