The New Political Economy of Land Reform In South Africa, By Adeoye O. Akinola In post-apartheid South Africa, land continues to be a key capital and social property. ADVERTISEMENT Despite the popular optimism that EWC is the necessary instrument to fast-track land reform, it may not be the magic wand capable of effectively redistributing land to the majority and redressing historical injustices. Policy implementation has been a major challenge in South Africa. EWC may later trap land in the hands of the government and a few elites… A lively discussion took place recently on  The New Political Economy of Land Reform in South Africa, which I edited, along with Irrshad Kaseeram and Nokukhanya Jili. The meeting was chaired by Ruth Hall, a leading land expert at the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), University of the Western Cape (UWC). Professor Tumo Charles Maloka, of the School of Law at the University of Limpopo, and I were the main speakers.

Nicklo Pedro MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The struggle icon Nicklo Pedro (54) lost his final battle last weekend when he succumbed to cancer at his home in Mossel Bay on Saturday 8 May.  In a statement released by the ANC of the Western Cape this week, Pedro is dubbed the people’s soldier and described as one of the brightest flowers of the revolution ensuring a free and democratic South Africa. He was recruited by Umkhonto we Sizwe while studying law at the University of the Western Cape. After fleeing from the security police, he was arrested near the Lesotho border in 1987 and taken back to Cape Town where he suffered at the hands of the notorious Wo Jeffrey Benzien, whose torture techniques are legendary.

UFS achieves another milestone

The UFS was among 13 South African universities that featured in the recent 2021-22 list of 2000 universities compiled by the CWUR. On the University of the Free State s (UFS) website, it is reported that the university has been improving its rankings recently and this has led to the university overtaking the University of the Western Cape to be ranked eighth, after being in position nine the previous year. The UFS now ranks 1163rd globally. Prof. Francis Petersen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of UFS, promised that the university will continue working hard for even greater results. “This is a significant achievement, and I am proud that the UFS could rise in the rankings.
