There’s a lot of false information out there about the two leading COVID-19 vaccines in the US. We wanted to provide the facts and answer some questions.
I’m not a doctor but know a few, so we asked: Does the vaccine give me COVID-19?
“The vaccine does not give you COVID. The front runners use mRNA from COVID, which is a part of the basic building blocks of the virus, said Dr. Josh Lesko, Brief19 Lead Policy Analyst.
“It allows for a small amount of genetic material called messenger RNA to be transported to our cells. And then our cell is able to use that information in that piece of genetic material to make a very specific protein that is usually found on the outside part of the virus that causes COVID-19. Once the body is able to create those proteins, then it can then use its immune system to then create a protective response, explained Dr. Jasmine R. Marcelin an Infectious Diseases Physician at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
SIOUX FALLS â A Yankton native received her Christmas present early, and it was a real shot in the arm for her.
Becca (Jensen) Parish, now living in Sioux Falls, became one of the first people in the nation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The inoculation carried double importance for her, as she deals with numerous health issues and also runs a retirement community.
âThis is the greatest Christmas present of all,â she said with joyous laughter.
A two-time cancer survivor, Parish lives with a compromised system. She survived non-Hodgkinâs lymphoma while in college about 20 years ago. Recently, she battled breast cancer followed by reconstructive surgery.
When preparing for the possibility that they would have a patient with Ebola, University of Iowa (UI) Hospitals and Clinics developed and created a biocontainment unit. But there needed to be a way to safely turn the unit back into an intensive care unit that was safe for all patients. That is when Mike Hartley, emergency manager for UI Hospitals and Clinics, learned about the effectiveness of ionized hydrogen peroxide, which would prove to be beneficial once COVID-19 hit.

The recent lowering of Public Health Solutionâs risk dial in Gage County, as well as the potential for another potential spike in COVID-19 cases after the holidays were two topics of discussion at Beatriceâs Board of Health meeting Monday afternoon.
The board approved amending the mask mandate to further clarify the ordinance, which is currently set to end on Friday, Jan. 15.
City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer said since Order 20-002 of the mandate was passed by the board on Friday, Dec. 11, he has met with several members of the public to discuss how to make the mandate better.
âIn those conversations, I believe weâve come to some agreement on how to kind of clean some of the language up in the order,â Tempelmeyer said. âThere still are opponents to the mask mandate, whether itâs the constitutionality or effectiveness, or number of other reasons.â
