COVID: SUNY offering Johnson & Johnson vaccine to students

The State University of New York system will make the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine available to its students before they head home in May, according to Chancellor Jim Malatras. More than 18,600 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine were being distributed to 34 SUNY campuses on Tuesday as eligibility expanded statewide to all New Yorkers ages 16 and older. The university system also planned to work with state officials to secure more doses exclusively for its other students in a push to limit the spread of coronavirus, Malatras said. SUNY officials noted Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is ideal for students because it requires just one shot to be fully effective. In contrast, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two shots separated by several weeks, which could complicate scheduling second doses for students leaving campus for summer break.
