Academic Tutoring Club leads donation effort for Roots of Music July 08, 2021 4:30 PM  |     At the end of the spring semester, Tulane’s Academic Tutoring club organized 100 self-care goody bags for Roots of Music students to help the students cope with the mental health challenges of COVID-19 isolation, as well as bring them some joy. The Roots of Music is a New Orleans-based organization that provides music instruction for children ages 9-14, empowering them with academic support and mentorship as well, according to their website. Recent School of Science and Engineering alumna Vidhatri Raturi organized the effort, with contributions from across the campuses and affiliated groups, including the Office of Admission, Tulane Alumni Association, Newcomb Institute, Athletics, Tulane Marching Band, The Phyllis M. Sydney workers and businesses to get more cash to cover lost income

A joint NSW and federal government relief package has been hammered out to help people and businesses suffering under the Sydney lockdown. The lockdown is expected continue beyond three weeks after a jump in Covid-19 cases in Sydney s southwest. Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday warned there was virtually no hope of lockdown ending as scheduled on Friday as businesses and workers face the prospect of a fourth week with little to no income. The state government has already committed $1.4 billion to help businesses and was reportedly keen to establish a NSW-funded JobKeeper-style program. Date Time Permanent national firearms amnesty The Australian Government has partnered with Crime Stoppers Australia to launch a permanent national firearms amnesty to keep Australians safe while ensuring those with a legitimate need to access firearms are able to do so. Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs, Jason Wood said, the amnesty, which begins today, allows anyone in Australia to hand in unregistered or unwanted firearms that could otherwise fall into the wrong hands. “Unregistered firearms are a threat to our community. They are difficult to trace and can fall into the hands of criminals to commit terrible crimes while avoiding police detection,” Assistant Minister Wood said.
