San Diego City to host virtual poetry competition for high school students -

San Diego Poet Laureate, Ron Salisbury, has joined the judging panel of the regional competition. Students from the following schools will compete in the competition and the winner will advance to the state finals in Sacramento: Academy of Our Lady of Peace, City of San Diego Bayfront Charter High School, City of Chula Vista Canyon Crest Academy, City of San Diego Will C. Crawford High School, City of San Diego Grossmont Middle College High School, City of El Cajon Valley Center High School, Valley Center. This year Jason is a candidate for Students of the Year for a third and final time and he is more motivated than ever despite the unique challenges of fundraising during a pandemic.

(Courtesy) Feb. 1, 2021 9:55 AM PT Dismayed by the discrimination that Asian Americans began facing at the onset of the novel coronavirus pandemic, a Canyon Crest Academy student decided to make a documentary highlighting the ways the Chinese community in San Diego has contributed to the relief effort. “As an Asian American, I was sad to see other Asian Americans face discrimination,” said Derek Ma, 18, a senior at CCA. Racist graffiti, verbal harassment and physical assaults against Asian Americans due to the pandemic have been taking place for more than a year, according to a list of media reports and other accounts compiled by the Anti-Defamation League.

Canyon Crest Academy’s Creative Writing Club announces 10th Annual CCA Writers’ Conference keynote speakers (Courtesy) Print Canyon Crest Academy’s Creative Writing Club recently announced two keynotes for the 10th Annual CCA Writers’ Conference. It will be held online over four days Feb. 20-21, and March 6-7, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. This event is the only free writing conference for middle school and high school students in the country. Registration is now open. Bestselling young adult author Gretchen McNeil will present the first keynote address on Saturday, Feb. 20. McNeil is the author of several young adult novels for Balzer + Bray including Possess, 3:59, Relic, I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl, Get Even, Get Dirty, and Ten, as well as the horror/comedy novels #MurderTrending, #MurderFunding, and #NoEscape for Disney/Freeform. Her next novel Dig Two Graves, pitched as a YA Strangers on a Train, hits shelves in March 2022.
