ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday asked the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to take action against those private TV channels, which violated the code of conduct, aired unofficial and unconfirmed results of NA-249 by-election before 6:00pm.
According to the Election Commission spokesman, the electoral body had given instructions to the media regulatory body to initiate action against these channels.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has condemned the advice of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), threatening media outlets of legal action against what the authority called fake, unauthentic and speculative news, says a press release.

South Asia: IFJ to launch 19th South Asia Press Freedom Report
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on behalf of the South Asia Media Solidarity Network (SAMSN) will launch the 19th annual South Asia Press Freedom Report entitled Truth In a Time of Pandemic: The Viral Frontline at 12:30 pm (New Delhi time) on May 3, 2021, World Press Freedom Day. The launch will be held online.
The report will include analysis on the situation of press freedom in every South Asian country, lists of detained journalists in South Asia, details of media rights violations and an interview with journalists’ union leaders in South Asia. The report will be uploaded to the IFJ website and SAMSN website as the launch commences.

I.A. Rehman, Pakistan’s renowned journalist and human rights icon passed away earlier this month on April 12 at the age of 90. His life was spread from the progressive movement in Aligarh University to the movement for human and worker rights in South Asia, and he was among those who were afflicted by the Partition of the subcontinent and his relatives were also killed in the riots.
