RINGGOLD, Va. — The Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Association in Ringgold held the area’s third large-scale vaccine clinic and the first held in Pittsylvania County on Saturday, where more than 700 residents received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. Through a partnership between the Virginia Department of Health, Sovah Health, Averett University, Danville Community College, 16 vaccinators provided vaccines for those who pre-registered from 12 p.m to 5 p.m. To increase accessibility for those most at risk, including those in rural areas and in black communities, where COVID-19 has had most impact, Pittsylvania Danville Health Director Dr. Scott Spillmann said Saturday’s event was an effort to bridge the gap in access.

Laying out bandages and setting up needles, volunteers got ready to administer 864 doses of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine. “We are never going to get out of this nightmare unless we get 70 to 80 percent of the population vaccinated,” Vice Mayor of Danville Gary Miller said. That’s why 91-year-old Louise Jefferson and 87-year-old Merlon Jefferson took the 20-minute drive from Dry Fork to Danville to get their vaccine.

The Virginia Department of Health’s Pittsylvania-Danville Health District, in cooperation with Sovah Health-Danville, the City of Danville, Pittsylvania County and Averett University, will conduct a closed “point of dispensing” (POD) COVID-19 vaccination clinic tomorrow at the Danville Community Market, 629 Craghead St. in Danville. All available appointments scheduled for this event are full.  “Registration for this event was prioritized for people and communities at highest risk of contracting COVID-19, and of experiencing more serious effects of illness, according to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices,” said Scott J. Spillmann, health director for the Pittsylvania-Danville and Southside Health Districts. “We have completed the registration process and look forward to providing vaccines to our families, friends and neighbors on Friday.
