Local health officials urge vaccinations amid surge in cases

Local health officials and professionals at Thursday’s weekly Peoria City/County Health Department briefing urged local residents to get vaccinated amid a COVID-19 case surge. According to Public Health Administrator Monica Hendrickson, many of the new cases continue to fall within the 0-19 age range. “In fact, 40% of our current active cases are under the age of 30,” said Hendrickson. “Just over 2,800 Peoria County residents under the age of 30 are considered fully vaccinated.” Hendrickson said many of the new cases are coming from out-of-school activities such as sports teams, dance academies, group dinners, travel and family get-togethers.

The Peoria City/County Health Department (PCCHD) Wednesday reported 369 new area cases of COVID-19 throughout Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties. Peoria County added the highest number of new cases with 193, while Tazewell and Woodford added 129 and 47, respectively. Even though there was a high new case count, no new deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours throughout the tri-county. Area hospital usage overall only increased by one, but five more patients are in area ICU beds Wednesday compared to Tuesday. As of Wednesday afternoon, 128 patients were in area hospitals with the virus.

Hospitalizations increased by one 126 to 127. 35 of the 127 as of Tuesday afternoon were in intensive care. Positivity rate for Region Two, which includes the tri-county, has increased to 6.7%. The number of COVID patients in hospitals went up by 12, and ICU bed availability dropped to 21%. CityLink is scheduled to partner Thursday with the Peoria City/County Health Department on a vaccination clinic. The clinic is scheduled to take place from 1 P.M. until 5 P.M., and is by appointment only.
